River Ancholme to be dredged

Section: Ancholme

2011 mar 2

It has been reported on bbc.co.uk that the River Ancholme will be dredged to reduce the risk of flooding.

The £60,000 project will remove around 3,500 tons of silt from the riverbed around Brigg. This is to increase the volume of the river and also to make the water flow more quickly. Both of these effects of the dredging should lessen the chance of flooding.

Work is already underway and will continue for the next three weeks.

The spokesman for the Environment Agency, Ian Russell, has stressed that the works will not eliminate the risk of flooding, so Brigg residents should make themselves aware of what they need to do at times of flooding.
