Powabyke Helps Eddie to Set New World Record!

2009 sep 21

67 year old record breaker Eddie Sedgemore is celebrating after notching up his second Guinness World Record thanks to electric bike company Powabyke.

Powabyke helped Eddie to prove that age is no barrier by facilitating the world record attempt earlier this year. Eddie had set a previous world record, having travelled from Land's End to John o' Groats on a push scooter. He has also completed the London Marathon five times, as well as the New York Marathon and has raised hundreds of pounds for charities in the past.

It was with these feats in mind that Powabyke MD Nick Child approached Eddie as the ideal candidate to put the new Powabyke X-byke model through its paces.

Nick Child was inspired to attempt to set a world record in a new category for the longest distance travelled on a motorised bicycle, and after discussions with Eddie, and many phone calls to Guinness, the challenge began on 9th May this year.

Eddie spent a total of 28 days travelling the length and breadth of the country on his X-byke visiting the northern, southern, eastern and western extremes of the UK mainland covering 1,912 miles, using power from the X-byke's lightweight lithium ion battery along the way.

The new record was confirmed by Guinness at the end of August, after Powabyke had submitted evidence of Eddie's attempt. Local MP Don Foster presented Eddie's certificate to him at a brief ceremony in Bath.

Eddie, a street cleaner from Marshfield near Bath, also raised cash along the way for the British Heart Foundation and was sponsored by staff from Powabyke.

Both local MP Don Foster and Powabyke MD Nick Child praised the efforts of Eddie Sedgemore in achieving his third world record, completing a mammoth personal challenge whilst raising funds for a vital cause.

Nick Child said, "We're really proud of Eddie and his remarkable achievement. We had no doubt that our bikes were durable enough for this intensity of challenge, and we were delighted that Eddie decided to put an X-byke through its paces."

"Powabyke are thrilled to be a part of this, helping Eddie to claim his third, very deserving, world record. If anyone else would like to try and beat this record or set a new one, they should come and chat to us!"

MP Don Foster added, "It is inspiring to see someone of Eddie's age taking up such a challenge, and it is great that he has had support from a reputable business like Powabyke. Eddie has shown that age is no barrier, and he is a shining example to the rest of us."

Eddie says he is thrilled to have picked up another World Record, and hopes to be included in the next edition of the Book of Guinness World Records.

He added, "It feels fantastic to have put in all of that effort, and to be rewarded with a brand new world record. It was a long journey, and I faced some horrendous wind and rain along the way, but looking back now it was all worth it."

"I met some lovely people in all corners of the country, and I'm also pleased that I managed to raise some money for the British Heart Foundation."

"I would like to thank Nick Child and the team at Powabyke for helping me, and making it all possible. The X-byke served me well throughout the journey, but I have to say it was good to get back home."

Eddie is unsure as to whether he will try for another world record in the future.
