BUGSS public meeting

11 October 2005

On Tuesday, 11th October a public meeting was held in the Angel Ballroom to discuss what went right and wrong with the Brigg Fair 2005 and to plan ahead for forthcoming events.

This year's fair was seen by the vast majority of people as a great success. There were, however, one or two complaints from shop owners who felt that the Fair was drawing trade away. One ride in particular on the Market Place had been sited too close to Way In Fashions and Pastimes Arts and Crafts. The BUGSS organisers were all told at the time, that there would be 'an inflatable' - but not what size it would be, nor where it would be erected! Prompt steps were taken to reduce the nuisance caused. Otherwise, most visitors enjoyed the wide range of things to do and experience at the Fair.

A suggestion was made to move the 'funfair' portion of the Fair to the Rec. In the past there had been a number of complaints about the siting of the fair on the Recreation Ground, but the idea of moving was seen as making it possible to enlarge and improve the attractions of the funfair. Dowses Funfair had expressed interest in running the fair.

One of the main concerns of the BUGSS committee was they wanted to put on the sort of Brigg Fair that the people of Brigg wanted. For this they are now actively seeking the views of residents and visitors. On 26 November and 17 December BUGSS are planning to take a stall on the Brigg Farmers Market so that they can get the opinions and ideas for what would be the best sort of Fair to hold. Should it be a 'country fair' or a 'town fair' - for example.

Plans are already in motion for a Valentine's Ball on Tuesday 14th of February 2006. Ballgoers will be encouraged to 'dress to the nines' in their best ballgowns and suits to capture a bit of the romantic and sophisticated mood of a society ball.

BUGSS is still seeking new members who can spare one or two hours a month - as two of the committee members have resigned for personal reasons. If you would like to 'do your bit' for Brigg and help out, you can contact BUGSS on 01652 678176 or 01652 659091.
