Bypass and Tesco changes
Monday, 1 November 2004
I am currently studying for my BA (hons) in English and History - and am seeking some help and advice. I am researching the changes in life in Brigg.
The aspects I would like to focus on are the bypass and how it affected business in the market place and the building of Tesco's - how it has benefited the area and also its down-falls. I went to school in Brigg and remember the hassle it was getting out of Cary Lane on the bus. But I am struggling to remember how the rest of the town looked before.
I would be very grateful for any help and advice you could give me and any useful books, places etc. that will help me in my quest.
Many thanks, Sharon
Ed. That sounds like an extremely interesting project, Sharon - and one which I am sure would be of interest to BriggLife visitors.
There are some local history books in the library, but the best method for any history project is to go back to original sources. Many of the shopkeepers around the Market Place and on Wrawby Street have been trading for many years and have personal experience of the bypass and the coming of Tesco's. I am sure that they would be glad to help if you went along for a chat.
There is also the BASH history group which meets on the first Tuesday of the month: there are many people there who are interested in or researching local history, so that is well worth a visit too.
Can you help Sharon with her studies? If so, please send an email and it shall be forwarded.
