Bogus data protection agencies

Sunday, 10 July 2005

Businesses in Brigg have been approached by companies stating that they must register for the Data Protection Act. These letters request an amount of money - around £130 - to 'register' your business.

If you receive such a letter you should make sure that it is from the genuine government department - The Information Commissioner's Office

The governmental website contains details about the requirements of the act and also news about companies which it is currently investigating.

It is possible, easy and cheap (£35) to register your company. Just surf to the government site for more information.

Businesses throughout the UK continue to be troubled by bogus data protection notification agencies.

The Information Commissioner (IC) is the only statutory authority for administering and maintaining the public register of Data Controllers.

Correspondence that is really from the IC always bears his Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire address.

There is no connection between the IC and these agencies. The IC continues to cooperate with other relevant authorities in the investigation of these agencies.

The annual statutory notification fee is £35.00, on which no VAT is payable.

If anyone is unsure as to the validity of any correspondence that has been received or requires further information then please write to us at the above address or contact our helpline on 01625 545740.
