"The Brigg Farmers Market is a great success", was the view of a group of enthusiastic Brigg traders at a recent meeting (28 June) of the Brigg Business Association as they welcomed guest speaker Margaret Price of North Lincolnshire Council.
"Every day is an event in Brigg - not just Farmers Market day," according to Tony Dancer. Jan Cassells and Louise Beacock thought that Brigg had gone through a "cultural change" and shopping in the pleasant market town was about getting to know the traders as people.
The traders, however, thought that the lack of signage to the shops from the main A18 road was a problem. "When people turn off the main road and visit Brigg they say that they love it, but many people drive straight by."
The River Ancholme was seen as a "great asset for the town" - but litter dropped in the river by an idle minority was detracting from its image. Efforts will be made to encourage the authorities concerned to clean up the mess.
Brigg has been selected for major residential growth by the government, and many practical ideas for welcoming new residents into the town were created.
Not content or complacent however with the booming trade in the market town, the Brigg traders came up with many practical ideas to build on this success:
- late-night shopping evenings on Thursdays to 9pm
- re-starting the boat trips on the Ancholme
- extending the Glanford Boat Club Regatta into the town
- encouraging new stallholders to the markets
- a Sunday "flea market"
The main emphasis for the Brigg Business Association, however, will be on promoting the existing attractions of the town. "Brigg has a great deal to offer with its wide range of specialist shops and services - but we have to let other people know how good it is!"
