Wilberforce

I don't know how well Wilberforce is known nationally - or internationally - but in Hull he is a bit of a Big Cheese; and today I went to visit Wilberforce museum in Hull's old town quarter. The display was educative - and equally important - free. (I'm adapting to a Tyke-based way of life!)

Wilberforces achievement? He passed a law at the turn of the century - so what you say? Well, this is some What: this law banned slavery in the British Empire. As always seems the case, Wilberforce only managed to see the law passed by 3 days before he died, but the effect of his act (and the efforts of the rest of the abolitionists) eventually lead to all the other slave trading nations to stop too.

Which is a pretty great thing to have done. At least, so I think. The world may not be perfect, and there are still a lot of wrongs to be righted, but recognition where it is due...

Nice one, Wilbo.
