History of Brigg, North Lincolnshire
Cary Lane Cottages
24 October 2004
I would like to enquire if anyone has any photos / maps / drawings of Cary Lane. I have connections with Nos. 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Cary Lane Cottages
Did you live here?
There is a photo of Cary Lane in the "Around Brigg, The Second Selection" book by John and Valerie Holland. According to an extract from the Catalogue of Elwes Property for Sale in 1919, the cottage which still stands at the rear of 7 Market Place (read article) was in fact 1 Cary Lane. The road at the time was half the current width and next to No 1. was a row of whitewashed cottages (Nos 2 - 9). No. 10 was a semi-detached cottage located somewhere across the road. I would be interested if anyone does have any old photos of Cary Lane, Brigg.
I also read with interest the article on your website concerning parish boundaries and Bridge Street posted on 7th September 2004.
My family originated from Brigg and I couldn't understand why one of my relatives who resided at 5 Bridge Street (same side as the Nelthorpe Arms) was buried in Scawby Churchyard. That was until one of the Scawby churchwardens informed me that Bridge Street in Brigg was at one point split between two parishes with the boundary running down the middle of the road. Properties on the Nelthorpe Arms side of the street were in the parish of Scawby, and the other side of the road was in the parish of Broughton.

PS - Regarding the article 'Seanford Hospital', I would rather think that the writer may have been born at 'Glanford Hospital'. During the course of my family history I have looked at various types of handwriting. A badly written 'G' and 'L' could be read as an 'S' and 'E'.
Ed. You are truly a star, Estelle! That is very useful information and it shall be passed on. Can anyone help Estelle with old pictures of Cary Lane? Emails shall be forwarded on to her.
