Brigg (North Lincolnshire) news - November 2006

After an £11 million investment in Broughton at Forest Pines the hotel is looking to take on extra staff. More bedrooms and a 'state of the art events centre' have been added improving Brigg's conference facilities. Elsewhere, the existing conference facility in Brigg - the Angel Suite - has lost £6000 this year. The operators, Brigg Town Council, are now using funds earmarked for other purposes to subsidise the rooms.

Brigg's skyline
Rebuilding is clearly in the air: pictured right is the Brigg skyline with central a crane hoisting the new roof on the Brigg Servicemen's Club. St John's church and the white clock tower of the Town Hall can also be seen.
Big feet? Like to be a special constable? Call Inspector Brett Rutty on 01482 808 172. Also helping to reduce crime, the 'drop in and chill out' sessions are being expanded to accommodate up to 40 youths. Brigg Town Council have plans to expand this youth facility into a cyber cafe, skateboarding / mountainbiking and all weather sports area.
Talking about youths - what is this whole 'education' thing about? Read the School Rant.
The other side of the waste issue was shown by the Rasen Mail which reported that 'Brigg householders are among the best recyclers in the region' - this based on the amount recycled in North Lincolnshire compared to 'the humber sub-region'. Mmm ... shows how the same figures can be interpreted to be either positive or negative. Still not getting down to the 3% of landfill in Holland yet, but who knows ...
Re: is Brigg boozy?
EMAIL. When you think of all the places in Brigg that sell alchohol, the units per person would be very large for the population. So I think it's official Brigg is the best place to get drunk. 13 pubs - 14 if you separate Hardys from The Nelson, 6 resturaunts 7 if you count the Deli, 9 places that sell alcohol and 3 clubs (the glanford boat club is a private members club). The angel suite has also a licence, do the bowls club have one? - P. Altoft.
Ed. Still not sure about the '14' number. From the west: Brock Ox, Yarborough Hunt, White Hart, Nelthorpe, Woolpack, Hardy's, Dying Gladioli, Black Bull, Ancholme, Britannia (= 10 pubs). The Vines and White Horse are restaurants. The Exchange is a private, contractor's hotel.

It's been one of those weeks in Brigg when things have come to an end. First the Sargent's Dairy Ice Cream parlour in Hibaldstow closed in mysterious circumstances after eighty years in the business - apparently being bought out and moving to Beverley. Then it turns out that Smith Parkinson's former garage on Market Place, Brigg has been (finally) sold to Grimley Smith Associates - a group of architects until very recently based on Bridge Street who then moved to Scnthorpe and now are going to move back to Brigg. Will the showroom become offices or shops at street level?

Electric works
Shocking news: the big Brigg electrical excavations have begun. £6 million to upgrade Brigg's electric supply to cope with the new houses being built. We were almost getting used to those romantic, candle lit evenings too with the numerous powercuts!
Brigg has once again been called the 'Booze Capital of the UK' with 14 pubs. There were 11 pubs at last count, so not sure where the 14 figure has come from (?) A sobering sight, however, has been the bed of the River Ancholme now that it has been drained for the winter. Anyone dredging the river could make a fortune on eBay selling muddy prams, bikes, etc!
Talking of recycling, Brigg has got it in the neck from officials at North Lincs Council over low levels of recycling in Brigg. Churchill Avenue has been 'named and shamed' with 46% of households putting out recycling boxes. Unfortunately the survey didn't bother to ask why people weren't putting boxes out: perhaps they recycle elsewhere or don't generate much rubbish. Surely making accusations based on figures without proper interpretation isn't the best way to encourage residents to recycle.
Websites of the month
Local websites are great! Each one - if not run by a faceless official body at least - is unique, showing the personality of its webmaster, contributors and local community. A truly exceptionally well crafted and interesting site is appleby-lincolnshire.co.uk based in Appleby, North Lincolnshire - a near neighbour of Brigg on the old Roman Ermine Street.
Talking of neighbours, you can now be a good neighbour worldwide by surfing to: nabuur.com. This site uses the power of the internet to give developing people the world over a chance to share knowledge, so that they can learn how best to help themselves. Practical, and a marvellous example of the positive side of the web.

Brigg - one of England's friendliest places?
EMAIL. From: Marilynn Timbrell, Lady of Worlaby.
Once again, I stayed in Brigg when I came to present the "Lady of Worlaby Diligence Award" at the Worlaby Primary School.
Each year I meet old friends, and make new ones. After a year away, I am always amazed when the shopkeepers remember me. Brigg is without a doubt one of England's friendliest places, and I look forward to my 2007 July visit with great anticipation.

Tools wanted
EMAIL. I am one of the co-ordinators of Shaftesbury court/Clevedon rd NWG, on new Westcliffe Scnthorpe. This area is run down neglected, needs cleaning tidying and a lot of tender loving care.
Instead of leaving it, we are in the process of achieving our aim with the help of the probation services. They can supply man power on a full time basis, we need to supply tools, spades, forks etc. Our area takes in a church, a park, a kids play ground old peoples residences etc.
We are looking for any donations of tools, big or small. If I can get any donation promises, we can set up a committee, go back to the probation services and contact sponsors again.
Thank you for your time taken to read this. Peter Woodcock

The Brigg squirrel
The rainforests may be being felled and turned into garden furniture leaving orang-utans homeless, but here in Brigg some animals are thriving despite our best efforts.
The squirrel (above) was pictured recently enjoying the autumn bounty of berries in a secret location in Brigg. Is there any truth in the old saw: if there are a lot of berries it will be a cold winter?
