Brigg (North Lincolnshire) news - January 2007

Winter over?

Probably a bit premature to say so, but according to the weather forecasters the winter has come and gone. Two days of cold and a snowstorm and that was it! Shows the effect of climate change: summer used to be two days of sun and a thunderstorm - now it has all changed round.

With the arrival of the first signs of spring, Brigg people have been having a spring cleanout with expensive consequences. Brigg Town Council are also splashing out on a revamp of the Tin Tabernacle.

Practical recycling

A group of 'tightwads' in Scunthorpe have come up with a great way of recycling our unwanted goods. They have created a website Regive.org on which you can place your unwanted household goods so that others can pick them up. You can also browse the items which are being given away. Re-use is much more efficient than just recycling. More: regive.org.uk.

Where there's muck, there's brass ...

We are all worried about global warming. But what if it were possible to not only solve one of the problems of greenhouse gas emissions, but also make a healthy profit at the same time?? One company is doing just that.

Thursday last in Brigg wasn't only the usual market day. Like the rest of the country and northern Europe, Brigg experienced the tail end of a tropical cyclone as winds of nearly 100mph struck.

Felled tree
Felled tree on Redcombe Lane

Brigg got off lightly with a couple of market stalls overturned and some tiles blown off the roofs on the marketplace and Wrawby Street. Pictured right is a branch of an ash tree which was snapped off and blocked Redcombe Lane.

Fed up with school? In an article entitled 'Pupils praised for missing lessons' (Hull Daily Mail 19 Jan) the beneficial effects of reducing school hours at a Hull school - St. Mary's College - were shown. Year 10 pupils were allowed to skip GCSE lessons and were able instead to do media studies for the last month of term. Attendance improved to 'national acclaim' under the Creative Partnerships scheme. Ed. "Less is more" ?

Although he will be leaving the Vale of Ancholme College, headteacher Geoff Hensman will - according to a news feature (Market Rasen Mail 17 Jan) - be retiring with happy memories after setting the school on a successful course.

The new Community Support Officers in Brigg have been visible - and hence - effective in tackling criminal behaviour in Brigg town centre. Gangs of trouble makers have been dispersed from the shelters near Kwiksave and Tesco's supermarkets. Underage drinking has also been successfully tackled.
