Catkins

Even though it is only the first week of February, spring has already broken. Above are hazel catkins seen fully open on the Ancholme bank ...

... and it is a fine time to stride out along the River Ancholme embankment between Tesco's and the motorway bridge.

Year of the Dog

Kung hai

The Chinese New Year begins (29 January) bringing in year 4703 in the Chinese calendar. One sixth of the world's population shall celebrate the year of the Dog.

Those born in the year of the Dog are faithful, hardworking and honest. Presumably, 2006 will also share these characteristics!

Families come together to remember dead relatives and clean and clear out any bad luck. Red banners 'Hui Chun' are hung to call in good luck. You can create your own and print it out at: Discover Hong Kong.

Re: Twitchers

Email from Irene:

The birds you have seen are probably a pair of buzzards which have been in the area for a couple of years. Even bred last year not far from us and produced one offspring. So lovely to see and the first pair I have seen here in the north since moving here 30 years ago.

...

Email from Kevin:

They are a pair of Honey Buzzards, they have been seen around Brigg.

Have you seen any rare birds or avian visitors recently?

Honey buzzards are migratory and feed on wasp and bee larvae.
