Re: Brigg - a 'Yorkshire Treasure' ?
Read piece below. I cannot see that Brigg is responsible for Caistor's undoubted trading decline. I think that it is due to two factors.
Firstly, long-term depopulation of the Wolds down to a few families each farming hundreds of hectares with big kit; they are not to blame, it is inevitable given modern globalisation and massive importation of fresh food (Tescos and others are to blame for that.) The hundreds of families that once lived on the land and would have attended the equivalent of Brigg's Stennett's Market have disappeared.
Secondly, straight down the A.46 there is a huge Morrisons at the second roundabout, and the A.46 also provides a fast link to Market Rasen the other way. There is a good hourly bus link both ways.
So why single out Brigg?

Brigg - a 'Yorkshire Treasure' ?Under a feature named rather strangely 'Yorkshire Treasures', the Yorkshire Post (1 July) stepped into northern Lincolnshire with a travel feature. Epworth and John Wesley get a star mention - even though he would have disapproved of leisure. Caistor too gets a mention: although it describes the town as: "One of those Lincolnshire places crowded with history and potential, yet marked by a shabbiness that would be unthinkable if this was the Cotswolds". According to 83 year old Harry Minns - former clerk of Caistor Grammar School - the decline of Caistor has been hastened: "by the Tesco in bustling Brigg drawing trade away". Reaction: Do you agree with Harry about the decline of Caistor and what do you think of Lincolnshire being a 'Yorkshire Treasure'? Send your reaction. The paper also has a two page feature about Stephen Hilder who fell to his death at Hibaldstow airfield in July 2003 which is linked to an ITV programme 'Real crime - Murder or Suicide?' (Mon. 3 July 9pm). |
