Shoefayre
Shoefayre, Wrawby Street

In a prominent feature in the Scunthorpe Telegraph's 'Heard on Brigg Streets' section, a decision by the Brigg Town Council to 'issue a reprimand in a letter' to the Shoefayre shop in Wrawby Street over the condition of the Shoefayre premises was featured.

In the report a picture of the shop was displayed which indicated a plant growing in the chimney pot of the premises.

However, as the saying goes 'People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones'.

When you take time to look up at the roofline around the market place, a wide variety of weeds can be seen growing in prominent positions on the 'home' of Brigg Town Council - The Angel.

Pictured above and below are some examples (ringed in red) from the Angel - which is a landmark building on the market place - with many plants growing happily in the gutters. Some of the plants are biennial indicating that they have been growing for at least a year undisturbed.

Comment from BriggLife:

Perhaps the council should spend more time 'cleaning up its own act' rather than issuing 'reprimands' to businesses.

The retail sector is under great pressure at the moment with slim margins and intense competition. Most if not all businesses would love to be able to keep their premises in tip-top condition, but they are not able to dip their hands into the pockets of rate and council-tax payers to fund this - unlike the council.

This sort of action from the Town Council does nothing other than tarnish the image of Brigg damaging trade in the town and indicates a lack of understanding of the problems faced by business.
