Election result 2005 in Brigg, North Lincolnshire

With the vast majority of results now in, it is clear that Labour has won the 2005 General Election. Locally Mr Ian Cawsey has been re-elected as the MP for Brigg and Goole.

Mr Cawsey's majority fell by 1067 votes to 2894. The results in Brigg show a similar trend to those nationally and suggest that national issues and party leaders were more significant to Brigg voters than local issues or candidates.
Looking back to the change from the 2001 election, all four candidates in Brigg and Goole have got something positive from this election - even if they didn't secure the seat. The Conservative Matthew Bean gained a further 258 votes (+1.60%) on the conservative vote of 2001.
The largest gains in numbers of personal votes were made by the Liberal Democrats who very nearly doubled their vote with an extra 1894 votes (+49.89%) and UKIP with an extra 580 votes (+84.30%). Although Labour lost some 809 votes (-4.03%) this compares favourably to the national trends.
The turnout was 63.2%.
