Glanford and Lindsey Raft Race

On 25th. July 2004 mayhem will breakout on what is normally a quiet stretch of the River Ancholme, just to the south of Hibaldstow. Why? Because 25th. July is the date of the next Glanford and Lindsey Raft Race!!

As always we are hoping for a warm, sunny Sunday morning for racing to begin at 10a.m. There are lots of trophies to be won in catagories for pub, mens, ladies, youth, decorated raft and fancy dress teams.

Barbeque and overnight camping is available for participating teams.

We would be very interested to hear from a recognised caravan and/or camping club, with a view to a rally23-25 July2004. We have lots of room and can provide marque(s), Saturday afternoon and night entertainment, with of course raft racing on Sunday.

We cannot promise the weather, but we can promise you a superb fun day out!

The event was held on 27 July last year on a beautiful summers day. But we were full of trepidation as the rain poured on the barbeque the night before. Despite which we all had an enjoyable evening ... and it stopped raining ... and all the children went back out to play ... and the adults carried on watching the Childrens Movie!

I was up at 5.30, and so was the sun. In fact the sun stayed with us all day. It was some time before anything other than the cows in the next field, stirred. But then they started appearing, one raft, then another and another. Soon the place was a hive of activity, with people cooking breakfasts, putting up stalls, finishing rafts, pitching tents. In no time it was 10a.m. launching began- some did and some didn't!!

A blast on an air horn confirmed that racing had begun. And so it went on until well into the afternoon. One of the days other highlights was the landing by a Skysports expert onto a cross marked in the field. Strewn around him were cards with names on, he picked up the nearest one, the person named on the card won a cash prize.

At the end of the day there were some scrapes and bruises, some sunburn, some very aching limbs and lots of talk about 2004 Raft Race. The Lion President made a quick speech, the trophies were awarded, and we all went home dreaming of a faster raft!!
