Oglesby

Margaret Long - 8 July 2006

Hello, I am tracing my family, by the name of Oglesby in Brigg, the family years ago lived at Chapel Yard.

I am trying to find records for them, they worked on the Ancholme, in 1882 Capt Steven Oglesby, had 2 fly boats, John Hewitt / Reuben Ferriby, they belonged to the Ancholme Packet Company, also they are mentioned in Gainsboro United Steam Packet Co / Hull / Ferriby Sluice and Brigg Steam Packet Co.

Have been to Lincoln Record Office - they can not help, maybe I am looking in the wrong place.

Please help, many thanks. Margaret Long.

Hi. These are the Oglesbys I can find:
Probate inventory at Lincoln Archives 183/262 dated 1683 - Richard Ogglesbie, who was a butcher in Brigg.
(also will no. 1683/i/84 and will no. 1683/ii/276) Probate inventory for William Ogglesby his son, 204/115 dated 1713, butcher (possibly with an ale house) and Will 1714/107.
Probate Inventory 1727:95 William Oglesby, Linen Draper.

I also suggest she looks at www.historicaldirectories.org

There is a chap at Barton who knows a lot about local shipbuilding history - he did a talk for BASH last year. There has also been a book brought out about shipbuilding history in Barton by a chap called Rodney Clapson I think - he might be able to help.

Regards, Sandra
